Accreditation

Accreditation by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine

What is the AASM?

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (ASSM) is a professional organization dedicated to the assurance of quality care for patients with sleep disorders, the advancement of sleep research, and public and professional education.

Why is Accreditation Important?

Accreditation by the AASM assures quality patient care through comprehensive clinical evaluation and treatment.  An accredited sleep center must demonstrate compliance to a detailed set of standards and practice guidelines, including

  • Employing skilled, licensed and qualified staff.
  • Oversight provided by a Diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine.
  • Creating and maintaining a clean, comfortable and safe environment for patients.
  • Developing and maintaining a quality assurance plan, and adhering to evidence- based practice parameters.

An accredited sleep disorders program is a significant resource to the medical community and to the public.  Additionally, AASM accreditation is the gold standard by which other organizations and companies evaluate sleep programs. This is reflected by the fact that in many states insurance companies require sleep studies to be conducted only at an AASM accredited Facility.

Accredited Sleep Centers vs. Sleep Labs
What is the Difference?

  • Sleep Disorders Center Accreditation is the highest level Accreditation available from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
  • Both Southeast Regional Greenville and Southeast Regional Easley are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Sleep Disorders Centers

Accredited Sleep Centers have a comprehensive approach to patient care, and must be able to treat all sleep disorders.  Sleep Centers offer full evaluations, comprehensive treatment options and have key positions staffed by Sleep Specialists who must be Board Certified as Diplomats of the American Board of Sleep Medicine.

Sleep Labs

Individual Sleep Labs need only be accredited to test for Sleep Apnea, and often do not include a comprehensive approach to evaluation and treatment.  Sleep Labs are often free-standing facilities, operated only at night, or they may exist in a non-sleep specialized physician office practice or hospital setting.
